‘Summer Learning Loss’ is a term used to explain that on average students lose 1-3 months of learning over the long summer break.

How can you help your child avoid this? Reading for pleasure plays a vital role and there are several sites dedicated to encouraging your child to read this holiday.

Why not visit the Barrington Stoke web site?   Barrington Stoke is ‘an independent publisher dedicated to cracking reading’. Their books are written to break down the barriers that dyslexia can create. Written by famous authors, with high interest and reading levels suitable for students who find reading a challenge.  Look for the RA ( Reading Age) and  IA (Interest Age) for each book.  To visit their site click here.

If your child has dyslexia ask at your local library for unabridged audio (Listening Books) to engage their interest( full length and complete versions).  Or join your local library’s summer reading challenge.  The theme for this year’s children’s reading challenge is ‘Record Breakers’. Click here for the Essex and Suffolk library challenge.
